Hallo Leute,
First Sunday of the month (and not only that, also first Sunday of the year 2024), which means new inspiration ready to be shared.
Today I’m introducing you to the work of a charming poster illustrator, a very fresh movie poster, an ad for the brand of colored pencils I use, a woobly picture of the Eiffel Tower and the first animated Hobbit!
Also a small trip to València and a couple more things I found interesting.
If this sounds appealing, keep reading!
✧ An illustrator: Daphne Padden ✧
Daphne Padden (1927-2009) was an English graphic designer born in 1927.
Being the daughter of Percy Padden who was a travel poster illustrator himself, she followed her father’s steps and made a career in poster illustration from 1950s to the 1970s.
Her work included the British European Airways, the Post Office Savings Bank, M&S Trust House Forte, Pall Mall cigarettes amongst others.
My favourite piece by her is probably this poster for Llandudno, I really like the vibrant colours and details in the scene.
Padden was also a watercolourist who painted countryside and wildlife, especially birds, in miniature (you can check them out here).
Her characters? Super adorable!
✧ A movie poster: Moje Siostry I Ja ✧
✧ An ad: Caran D’Ache ✧
✧ A picture: Tour Eiffel ✧
✧ A short: The Hobbit ✧
That Gollum staring at you closes the first letter of the year, which I really hope you’ve enjoyed… Ah, nope! Wait, there’s more!
I went to Valencia a couple weeks ago (which technically is last year, I will never not use that silly stupid joke whenever I have the occasion) and attended Baba Kamo, a festival dedicated to illustrated books.
I went to portfolio reviews, talks, got some new books and took some pictures of the city.
My friend Luna Pan welcomed me into her place and took me on a tour through Valencia, she’s a wonderful artist and you can see some of her work here.
We also did a zine together about fear and anxiety that you can get here.
As I didn’t want this letter to be neverending, in case you’d like to, you can read more about València here.
While I was in the city, I dropped off some prints and zines at Bangarang Comics store (Carrer Historiador Diago 9, València).
And you can also find some of my art prints at another store in Barcelona called Mercilona (Carrer Princesa 27, Barcelona). It seems I’m determined to conquer the world with my art (or at least the city :) )!
Some more things I’ve enjoyed lately:
✸ This post of DADA issues on how Roman Muradov’s does comics.
✸ The discussion generated in this blog post on the difference between illustration vs fine art.
Now we do have really reached the end of this first issue, I hope you’ve enjoyed the read and I’ll see you next month for more 🌞
Hope your entrance to this new year was a nice one and I wish you all the best in 2024!

Oh my goodness! There is so much in this one post that I love, love, love! Your doom scrolling gif is perfection!
I really need to spend some time watching that animated Hobbit, it looks amazing! I had no idea it existed, I thought you were going to link to the 1970s Lord of the Rings
The advert for Caran D'Ache is fabulous!
Qué descubrimiento Daphne Padden! Es una pasada como combina los colores.
Y el corto del Hobbit siempre me ha gustado mucho!
