Hello, my friends, how is your Sunday going?
I hope it’s neither too hot nor too cold, and it’s the perfect temperature.
Around here we’ve had a mostly cloudy and quite rainy couple of months which is good because we were in a period of severe drought… But since a couple of weeks ago we are in full Summer mood - this week we’ve had really high temperatures and what bothers me most, the annoying combo of: heat + humidity that leaves you with little desire to do anything but melt. Nice!
So, as a way to refresh my brain, and your’s too, today I’m bringing you not just one but two artists, a super cute ad for mineral water, a drawing with wonky perspectives which happen to be the very best, and a book full of magic tricks.
✧An artist couple: Naiad and Walter Einsel✧
Today we’ll see the work and life of Naiad and Walter Einsel. Let me introduce you to: The Einsels.
Naiad Einsel (1927 - 2016) was an American commercial illustrator and artist born in Philadelphia, whose work appeared in magazines, books, newspapers and brands. Clients included Good Housekeeping, Woman’s Day, Cosmopolitan, The New York Times, Xerox, M&M, Macmillan, Random House, Harcourt Brace & Jovanovich, Clarkson Potter, and Workman Press amongst others.
Her interest in art began in her father’s grocery store, where she would draw on the brown wrapping paper and was fascinated by the rubber stamps used in the store.
On the other hand, Walter Einsel (1926-1998) was an American sculptor and illustrator born in Westport. His career took off with an illustration for The New York Times, which was followed by work for Life, Look, TIME, Boys’ Life and The Saturday Evening Post.
Naiad was a graduate of Pratt Institute and was working as an art director at CBS, Walter, who was a graduate from Parsons School of Design, held the same position but at NBC. They met when Walter applied for a better job at CBS.
Naiad and Walter married in 1953. Their similar styles of work enabled them to work together in many different projects: books, magazines, posters, advertisements, etc.
So… I’m probably not the only one feeling a liiittle bit jealous of those lines, am I?
Ok, then, look at this book they both designed and illustrated. SO GOOD.

Hey, if you check The Attic via the website, you’ll notice there’s a new tab on the menu where I’ve linked to all the posts featuring women artists. I want to feature more, but sometimes it’s hard to find them or any info at all, so if you have a favourite, please do share! :)
And with that disappearing act, this letter also fades to black… just until next month.
Stay hydrated,
